4th Grade Science

What a Student Can Expect

Students embark on an exciting journey of discovery! They will explore various topics such as ecosystems, the properties of matter, energy, and the Earth's systems. Hands-on experiments, interactive activities, and engaging discussions will make learning fun and memorable. Students will also develop critical thinking skills as they ask questions and seek answers about the world around them.

What They Should Know by the End of 4th Grade

Students should be able to integrate science and engineering practices—such as asking questions, planning and conducting investigations, developing models, analyzing data, and constructing explanations—with disciplinary core ideas across Physical Science (e.g. using evidence to explain the relationship between an object's speed and its energy), Life Science (e.g. recognizing how animals use perception and memory to guide their actions), and Earth and Space Science (e.g. using patterns from rock layers and fossils to explain landscape changes), along with crosscutting concepts like patterns and systems to deepen understanding and apply learning in context

Course Objectives

  • Explain motion and energy relationships: Use evidence to describe how an object’s speed relates to its energy. IXL LearningCore Docs

  • Observe energy transfer: Make observations that demonstrate energy can be transferred via sound, light, heat, and electric currents. IXL Learning

  • Predict energy changes in collisions: Ask questions and predict outcomes about how energy changes when objects collide. IXL Learning

  • Design energy transformation devices: Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. IXL Learning

  • Understand energy phenomena through units of study:

    • Converting Energy: Investigate energy transfer and sound production using models to explain energy systems. Core Docs

    • Motion: Investigate how energy and speed affect motion and collisions, and model energy transfer among objects.
